Godzilla Minus One Reviews Call It a Masterpiece
Beyond getting a new television show with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the world of Godzilla is expanding with a new movie. Godzilla Minus One, number 37 in the filmography of the famous Kaiju. And it seems to be a true masterpiece. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki (The Great War of Archimedes) and produced by Toho, the film takes place after World War II, presenting an emotionally and economically devastated Tokyo. In the midst of the depression, Godzilla appears to instill fear, unleash violence and provoke an even greater crisis.
The movie had its premiere in Japan before its official presentation at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and the first reviews have already come to light, showing great excitement for the story and its development. Here are some of the comments the film has received across social media (via ComicBook.com):
"I was shown a preview of Godzilla Minus One, and it was incredibly interesting. A strong anti-war movie. However, at the same time, there were many scenes that made me think I wanted to see this kind of battle, so I couldn't help but get excited. I've seen every Godzilla movie, but this one is now my favorite. It will make you cry and touch your heart in many ways. It is a masterpiece."
Godzilla Minus One is so good in fact that it has left some speechless:
"Tonight I was invited to a screening of Godzilla Minus One. It was so awesome and heavy that I can't put it into words. There was so much sadness that I needed to say it aloud. Even though it was the complete opposite of Shin Godzilla, I felt the same excitement. Godzilla is alive."
Others have described the Godzillaouting as "beautiful" and a "masterpiece."
"I watched Godzilla Minus One. Honestly, it was impressive. This is the most beautiful Godzilla movie in Godzilla's history, and I believe it is director Takashi Yamazaki's masterpiece. I immediately told an old friend of mine who is an advertising producer, and that's the first time I've ever done that... I cried like never before."
Finally, words like "amazing" and "crazy" have also been thrown around when discussing Godzilla's latest rampage:
"I watched Godzilla Minus One at its final cut preview. Wow, it is amazing. It's dangerous, it's crazy. That's all I can say about it right now, but you should definitely watch."
Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yōji Akitsu.
What's Next for Godzilla?
Godzilla Minus One is hitting theaters in Japan on November 3, but still doesn't have a release date for the rest of the world. Fortunately, Godzilla fans will be able to enjoy another adventure of the monster in Apple TV's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is part of Legacy Entertainment's MonsterVerse.
“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco, and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch," the official synopsis for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reads. "Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.”
The franchise will also expand with a new movie next year. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will see the two monsters fighting together against a bigger threat after their showdown in 2021's Godzilla vs Kong. The film is set to hit theaters on April 12, 2024.
