DELHI CRIME SEASON 1 REVIEW : REAL, RAW AND HARD-HITTING
Story: Based on the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case, the series follows South Delhi’s DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, who creates a special team of officers to hunt down the six culprits, while fighting poor infrastructure, red-tapism and mounting public pressure along the way. Review: Inspired by Delhi Police’s investigation of the Nirbhaya gang rape case - a crime so brutal it sent shockwaves through the nation and brought its people to the streets in protest - Delhi Crime is not your regular ‘cat and mouse’ game. Narrated from the perspective of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah), a no-sense stern police officer with heart, the series takes you back to that winter of 2012. A few minutes into the first episode Deepika, who was gang-raped in a moving bus, and her injured friend Akash, are found lying stark naked by the side of the road, before the arrival of head constable Ram Pratap (Asif Ali Khan). The scene makes you shudder, thus setting the tone for the series. From there, DCP Vartika’s efficient task force heads out in different directions and paths, in search of the accused. Through its ‘realistic’ chronicle of the entire investigation, the series makes subtle commentaries on the socio-political-economic conditions we live in, and how these also affect the police force. From standing up to politicians acting as a deterrent in the case, to dealing with protests, red-tapism, poor infrastructure, mounting public pressures, and even flak from their own family members - it outlines the many hurdles they face on the job, including how poorly they are paid and sometimes treated. You see a more human and vulnerable side to them. The show is fast-paced and well-edited, and rarely digresses from the plot. It managed to be gut-wrenching without being gory, and heart-breaking, without any melodrama. Watch it for the intelligent writing, which is backed by brilliant performances by the actors - both lead and supporting.
